Richard Benjamin - Rapper

1/30/09 Richard Benjamin knows about things. Another college dropout thinking that he can rap, he knows he is not alone in this category. Already hailed by the hip hop community as one of the young lyricists the industry should be on the look out for, he knows that praise and favor leave as quickly as they came. He knows that hard work, sharp skill, and relentlessness are all necessary to succeed. Even though his Capitol Hill Mixtape received over 6000 plays the first day it was released with zero promotion and has been featured on various Seattle and Los Angeles-based music websites to excellent reviews, he knows that people are already looking for what’s next. He knows these things.

That is why this Seattleite wakes up in his Capitol Hill domicile in the same way everyday. Sun up’ed, balls scratched, Eggos toastered, and studio opened. Everyday, all day. Working his music career like a nine-to-five barely curbs the hunger he keeps for writing and performing good music. His apartment looks like a war memorial for Post-its, with every surface covered with notes, lyrics, translated beat inspiration, and reminders to pay bills that have been avoided since the mail man dropped them off. He says, “Every dollar I have goes towards beats, beers, buds, and breakfast, and I am fine with that.”

Talented, multi-faceted, original, and genuine, Richard Benjamin only wants one thing from this world. “All I am saying is just give me a chance. If you’re a promoter, book me on a show. I will stomp holes in your stage barefoot and make kids flip a finger to their curfews. I’ll get your whole show drunk and sweaty. I’ll bring sleeping bags for when chicks pass out. If you’re a producer, send me a beat and I will eat it with garnish. I will sound off 48 bars for you and leave with parsley in my teeth. I’ll sing the hook, rap the verse, and get the coffees, I could care less. And if you’re a label, you need me. Send me what little money you have left so I can pay my internet bill and I will save your label. Times are hard, I’m harder.”

And with the release of his debut EP, Sleepless in Seattle, he aims to show the world how diverse he can really be. Sounds ranging from smashing tribal drums, orchestral compositions, club crushing synths, Pinot Noir bass tones, and genre-bending guitar provided by Dave Shul (Michael Franti and Spearhead) fill this four-song offering to the brim, and strays far away from anything the hip hop community is currently offering. The vocal tracks speak for themselves. Rap with emotional range all over the spectrum plus singing his own hooks make him one of the most diverse artists in the genre. His understanding of song structure and what it takes to write a hook is unparalleled at his level. A true rap renaissance man.
