Andrew Chittenden - Illustrator/Cartoonist

Andrew Chittenden (a.k.a Chitty) is an LA filmmaker, animator and cartoonist who devoted four years at Yale to avoiding sleep as much as physically possible.  When he wasn’t in studio painting and drawing, he was out directing or shooting a short film; or perhaps he was holed up in a theater designing sets, lighting and projection; or at the very least he was fighting to stay awake at his desk finishing a comic strip or illustration for a college publication.  Since graduating, he has experimented with the feasibility of continuing all these pursuits simultaneously.

For the world of ink and paper, this has entailed a webcomic, Chittyland.  Every week Andrew finds himself at his desk, pen in hand, struggling to reconcile Chris Ware’s architectural precision with Bill Watterson’s effortless spontaneity, Herge’s open line simplicity with Edward Gorey’s dizzying mark-making.  Each comic is an experimental step towards finding his voice and hand, and towards that long form graphic novel that is sure to materialize some time or another.

The world of CCDs and celluloid has just as strong a pull.  Though focusing primarily in cinematography and directing, Andrew always tries to fit in some storyboarding, animation, production design, lighting design and writing—each one, in his mind, a necessary step toward mastering the medium.  He quietly hopes that there will always be a place for his hand-drawn animation and in-camera special effects in a world of all-powerful computers.
