Amani Starnes - Singer

This week we present Singer/Songwriter Amani Starnes
Amani’s roots are in Kansas City, MO, where she was strongly influenced by her diverse upbringing and the city’s Jazz and musical traditions. She has been performing professionally since…forever. Growing up, she found she identified with people from all walks of life through music, dance, and drama. In addition to extensive contemporary dance and theatre experience, she’s always been, and never quite stopped, singing—in the community leading the youth choirs, at the dinner table, even in class despite teachers’ requests that she shut up until music class. Soon, she was starring in professional choirs and musicals through out the city. Her love of other cultures and languages took her to places like Latin America, Japan, and Europe, where she performed with musicians from around the world. After attending Yale University and studying abroad in London and Spain, Amani graduated with a degree in Theater in 2005. She had a brief stint in Manhattan, performing left and right, taking voice and acting classes, and dancing at the Ailey School. Since moving to Los Angeles, she’s become a member of Tim Robbins’ The Actors’ Gang, and has begun honing her skills and an independent singer-songwriter, all while continuing to shine in rock operas, plays, musicals, and films. Her outlandish life experiences, professional training, and love for the art of human expression continue to fuel her desire to perform and share her voice with the world.
She’s currently working on her debut EP, Match Play, a whimsical but heartfelt approach to songs about the variations of love. The EP will inspire listeners to dance, sing, and reflect on romance! The sound is original and unique—a synthesis of pop, soul, funk, and jazz, all channeled through the musical filters that are Amani and the team of awesome musicians backing her up. Think Stevie Wonder meets Lauryn Hill, meets Alicia Keys, meets the Jackson Five, meets Britney Spears (yes, it can be done)!
